CapRelo in Vegas at SHRM 2015

Posted by Brian Shea on Wed, Jul 08, 2015

Last week, Las Vegas, Nevada was the place to be for HR professionals, business leaders, consultants and academicians from around the world. SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) 2015 started off with a bang with keynote speeches from notable figures such as Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski and the final two days were no exception.

On the third day of the conference, Mika Brzezinski, noted author and co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” took to the stage. Mika demonstrated the power and purpose that helped her re-negotiate her MSNBC contract to be on equal footing with her male co-host. To have the confidence to advocate for herself and broker a more formidable contract, she needed to understand her value, which is the message she brought forth to the thousands in attendance.

Brzezinski conveyed how important it is to demonstrate your worth to advance your career. Mika encouraged the audience to "get over being grateful and understand that organizations are lucky to have [you]." This may be out of your comfort zone, yet she urged the audience to keep at it, to know what you bring to the table, to demonstrate your worth.

Later in the day, we were fortunate enough to hear from William David Wright of Fisher & Phillips, LLP about his global assignment, Components of a Successful and Compliant Expat Assignment. From the top down, David Wright stressed the preparation needed so every detail of an expatriate relocation runs smoothly.

One of the main points William touched on was finances. Ensuring that an employee is paying equal tax, receiving the correct payroll, and continuing to receive the same benefits regardless of country is key, not just for the employee, but for the employer as well. Benefits from completing the expat assignment must also be clearly defined beforehand. Cultural integration was also a hot topic, for the comfort of both employees and their families. This must all be addressed in advance of the assignment to avoid contract disputes and arbitration, which can go on for lengthy periods and cost corporations large sums of money.

The entire SHRM 2015 conference was an incredible learning experience for our team. From inspiring keynote speeches to informational sessions, SHRM provided valuable networking and education. SHRM 2016 will take place in CapRelo’s backyard, Washington, D.C., and we look forward to seeing you there!

CapRelo in Vegas at SHRM 2015

HR professionals, business leaders, consultants and academicians from around the world roared into Las Vegas this past week to attend the SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) annual conference. From Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, the winningest basketball coach in NCAA Division 1 history, to Dr. (Mehmet) Oz, a world-renowned surgeon, SHRM had it all. 200 concurrent sessions took place over the four day conference, providing a complete education to HR professionals at every stage of their career.  CapRelo was on-hand to participate and exhibit at the conference, and in case you couldn’t make it to the show this year, we’re providing highlights from the week.

Mike Krzyzewski was the first speaker to take the stage on day one of the conference and the room filled up in no time. So how did Coach K become the winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 history? Because he is not a basketball coach, he is a leader that happens to coach basketball.

In his keynote speech, “Victory Through Teamwork and Leadership,” Coach K discussed how important it is to exchange ideas. These ideas help us improve as human beings and colleagues. Krzyzewski also talked about how important it is to keep it personal and to know everyone’s name. Opening your heart and developing trust can take relationships to another level. This is the atmosphere that Coach K believes HR departments and professionals should create.

Jennifer McClure of Unbridledtalent.com hosted a fantastic general session the following day, teaching her Seven Strategies to Transform from an HR Leader to a Business Leader. She stressed the importance of having talent in the right place at the right time, and for the right price.

Another insightful topic Ms. McClure discussed was successful talent management. She noted that at 80%, “remote” is the number one keyword in indeed.com job searches. Location is one of the key factors in acquiring and retaining talent. Among other factors, the other top attraction drivers for talent are salary and job security. 73% of employees looking to leave their current employer do not trust their corporate relationship; therefore it is important to identity why each individual employee’s work matters. This care for employees is what helps organizations retain talent in the right place, at the right time, at the right price.

The first two days of SHRM were an incredible learning experience for our staff. From HR strategies to general business advice, SHRM has an enormous amount of information to offer to all business professionals. Stay tuned for our next post with even more from our experiences at the SHRM Annual Conference!
