Last week, Las Vegas, Nevada was the place to be for HR professionals, business leaders, consultants and academicians from around the world. SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) 2015 started off with a bang with keynote speeches from notable figures such as Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski and the final two days were no exception.

On the third day of the conference, Mika Brzezinski, noted author and co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” took to the stage. Mika demonstrated the power and purpose that helped her re-negotiate her MSNBC contract to be on equal footing with her male co-host. To have the confidence to advocate for herself and broker a more formidable contract, she needed to understand her value, which is the message she brought forth to the thousands in attendance.

Brzezinski conveyed how important it is to demonstrate your worth to advance your career. Mika encouraged the audience to "get over being grateful and understand that organizations are lucky to have [you]." This may be out of your comfort zone, yet she urged the audience to keep at it, to know what you bring to the table, to demonstrate your worth.

Later in the day, we were fortunate enough to hear from William David Wright of Fisher & Phillips, LLP about his global assignment, Components of a Successful and Compliant Expat Assignment. From the top down, David Wright stressed the preparation needed so every detail of an expatriate relocation runs smoothly.

One of the main points William touched on was finances. Ensuring that an employee is paying equal tax, receiving the correct payroll, and continuing to receive the same benefits regardless of country is key, not just for the employee, but for the employer as well. Benefits from completing the expat assignment must also be clearly defined beforehand. Cultural integration was also a hot topic, for the comfort of both employees and their families. This must all be addressed in advance of the assignment to avoid contract disputes and arbitration, which can go on for lengthy periods and cost corporations large sums of money.

The entire SHRM 2015 conference was an incredible learning experience for our team. From inspiring keynote speeches to informational sessions, SHRM provided valuable networking and education. SHRM 2016 will take place in CapRelo’s backyard, Washington, D.C., and we look forward to seeing you there!
